Working on developing powerful content is only one part of being a blogger. You’ll have to wear multiple hats if you want to take your blog to the next level and attract readers to your blog. There are two ways to promote your blog. The first way, which most bloggers focus on, involves pulling traffic from social media sites and search engines. Being involved on Twitter and optimizing your blog posts for Google can be a good start there. What most bloggers forget about is pitching the content they already have on their blog to their existing visitors. You don’t want to just focus on attracting new visitors. Your goal should be to retain them as long as possible. In order to do that, you’ll need to focus on ways to pitch your useful posts to your readers and help them discover other useful content that you may have on your blog.

If you are looking to promote your blog posts on your blog more effectively and get more people to visit your older content, here are 5 ways you can address the issue:

  1. Similar Articles: one way to keep the attention of your visitors by providing them with a way to explore similar articles to the one they have just read on your blog. Your readers are more likely to check out those similar articles on your blog if you don’t make them search for it. WordPress plugins such as Similar Posts can certainly help here.
  2. Popular/Favorite Articles: another way to gain the attention of your visitors is by showing them what articles are popular on your blog. There are two ways to implement this. You can always create a “my favorite posts” section on your blog and show your best articles there. You can also use scripts to keep track of your posts and display the ones that get the most hit in your “popular articles” section.
  3. Random Posts: that’s my favorite way to promote my blog posts to my readers. Your new readers don’t know too much about the history of your blog. They don’t know what topics you have covered on your blog or what things they need to look for on your site. Displaying random posts to your visitors can help them find other useful content on your blog and get more out of it. Besides, some of your older posts that may not be getting enough love can get some exposure with this method. The idea of randomness does make this section of your blog more fun for your visitors.
  4. Referred Posts: if you have taken advantage of Amazon.com’s services in the past, you have probably seen this section on the site. Let’s say you want to buy a camera from Amazon. Once you find the product that you are looking for, you are going to see a section that shows you what other items people have checked after viewing the page you have visited. Wouldn’t you be tempted to check those items out too?
  5. Posts By Category: not all blogs are created the same. Let’s take a large blog such as Mashable. Those folks focus on too many topics on a daily basis, almost too tough to keep up with all of them. One way to promote posts on such a blog is by creating a top posts by category section. That way your visitors can discover related posts that happen to be popular on your blog. If you are blogging about a broad topic, this tactic may help you get more targeted visitors to your older posts.
