How To Turn Your Hobby Into a Blogging Business

One of the best topics that you can tackle with a blog is your favorite hobby. Hobbies are dear to our hearts, and we can’t seem to run out of opinions and ideas about our hobbies. Start a hobby blog can be risky depending on your hobby of choice, and it could test your love for your hobby. I have known a few bloggers that have found out that they actually don’t love their hobbies too much after all. So if you feel that starting a blog on your hobby can taint your overall experience, you may want to look elsewhere for your blog topic.

But if you choose to write about your hobby (mine is chess by the way), you can easily connect with people who share the same passion for your hobby. For instance, it would be easy for me to discuss chess related material on a blog (I chose not to do so as I rather play chess than talk about it). Here is how you can achieve a successful hobby blog by sharing your thoughts with others:

  • It’s all about the experiences: talking about your experiences can lead to compelling content for your blogs. You can talk about how you fell in love with your hobby, or offer advice to others on your hobby. It’s simply powerful stuff.
  • It’s all about information: you can literally turn your hobby to a successful blog by going outside the box and talk about different products and services in your market. For instance, if you are planning to write about chess, you can also talk about chess books, chess software, chess training, and even other games such as checkers or backgammon. It’s all about connecting the dots, and there is a good chance that chess players are interested in other games too. It’s all about finding the common areas and expanding your horizon.
  • Form a voice: I remember reading about how a site became a true advocate of a cause in an industry. By discussing your opinion about a hobby or standing up for a good cause, you can form a true community with your blog. Your goal should be to become the authority site in your market. You can get there by discussing the latest developments and stories, and sharing your opinions on them. Just make sure that you are are consistent and not flip-floppy when it comes to important issues.

Forming a blog about your hobby can be extremely rewarding. Not only you get to talk about what you love, you also get a chance to form friendships with others with the same hobby. Just make sure that blogging about your hobby doesn’t take away from it. After all, if you spend more time writing about your hobby than actually doing it, then what’s the point of having that hobby.
