If I could have a cent for every time someone asked me “how should I drive traffic to my site?” I wouldn’t have to work another day of my life. The truth is the traffic problem is everybody’s problem. That’s why “how to drive millions of people to your website” ebooks sell like crazy. People are willing to pay thousands of dollars to get their hands on the secret formula that will bring traffic to their site. Now, I am not going to play the conversion card here (as more traffic doesn’t mean more money). But in Twitter, we have a tool that has the potential to drive thousands of people to your site if you approach it the right way.

Twitter is a micro-blogging community that lowers the barrier of entry to the blogging world dramatically. You don’t even need to have a website to be able to tweet your way to cash. But in general, you’ve got to have a website to be able to take advantage of twitter.

How To Drive Traffic To Your Site With Twitter

Twitter is a wonderful too that is often underrated. People just don’t give Twitter enough credit. But any tool that is used by thousands of people can be a potential goldmine. You just have to play your cards right.

  • Share your valuable content on Twitter: if you blog for a living, you can make it big on Twitter. If you teach people to do something right (e.g. how to optimize your WordPress for organic search), you can gain traction on Twitter. You need to establish yourself as an authority and share your valuable content by linking to them from your Twitter account.
  • Engage In Conversations: many folks treat Twitter as a one way communication channel. That’s the absolute wrong way to approach Twitter. Not only should you share your content on Twitter, but you should also talk with others, ask them questions, answer their questions, and more. Twitter is a many-to-many communication tool. So stop treating it as a one way communication channel.
  • Watch Yourself: if your blog is your business, you should be careful about your behavior on Twitter. It’s easy to engage in nasty conversations with folks who are on Twitter to chat when they are drunk. But if your business depends on it, you should behave on Twitter.
  • Follow Others as they follow you: you should try to follow folks who you believe are providing valuable content on Twitter. It’s a form of networking really. When folks follow you on Twitter, you want to be a bit picky. Don’t follow back folks who have nothing in common with you, but if these guys are in your niche and talk about related issues, then you want to follow them back.
  • Put 110% effort behind your Twitter presence: I know a lot of folks tweet only an hour or two a day. But if you are just starting, you should try to dedicate a couple of weeks of twitting hard. By hard I mean engaging in conversations, answering questions, asking thought provoking questions, and so on. And you should do it for 5 or 6 hours a day. That approach has worked for me very well. Once you have enough followers, you can ease off, but you should still maintain your presence to keep your followers engaged.

Did I miss anything? There are millions of other things you can do on this wonderful platform. You just have to give 100% effort and believe in it. Driving lots of traffic with Twitter is possible. Many folks are doing that on an everyday basis. But it takes a lot of effort, and it won’t be easy at first. But who said getting free traffic would be easy?
