Should You Own Multiple Blogs?

I remember when I started blogging. I was so excited that I wanted to write about everything and anything. Of course, my goal at the time was to make as much money to be able to quit my daily job and start a startup. I worked 10 hours a day at a great company and blogged every night. I was sleeping about 3 hours a night, which was not healthy at all. But my goal was simple. Create 30 blogs and make $10 on average on each blog for a total of $300 a day. Note that I wasn’t planning to make a million by blogging myself to death. But making about $100K a year blogging would allow me to have enough money to finance my startup idea. But blogging for multiple blogs can be tough to handle and sometimes unhealthy.

It’s true that 2 good solid blogs can bring you more money than one. But people often underestimate the amount of time that it takes to manage two quality blogs. There is no short cut in the blogging business. You either work hard to provide unique value to your users or your blog gets added to millions of other non-important blogs on the Internet. Now there is no question that if you feel you can handle multiple blogs, you should give it a try. But I would recommend signing up for freelance blogging before start a whole new blog. Try to find out how whether you can handle the extra load. Managing a blog is more than just writing a good post everyday. You will want to be involved within your community and market (other blogs, forums, social networks). You also want to keep up with the news in your market (via bloglines or Google reader). Besides, you will have technical challenges as well. So creating multiple blogs can take a lot of time and effort and often requires outsourcing.

Now I personally have more than one blog, so it would be hypocritical of me to suggest you shouldn’t. However, if you decide that having multiple blogs is the right approach for you, make sure you don’t sacrifice your health for it. Keeping that in mind, having multiple solid blogs is often a wise decision (don’t forget to build separate lists per niche!). If you can handle it, then go for it! Good luck.
