As you may know by now, Twitter is here to stay. I remember when Twitter was introduced to the public a whileback. A whole crop of analysts jumped the gun and claimed that Twitter was overrated, and there was no point behind it. But the truth of the matter is, in a very short period of time Twitter has become a powerhouse in the blogging industry. In fact, Microblogging may trump regular blogging in the near future.

You’d be surprised how many successful marketers use Twitter to not only drive traffic to their sites but also achieve more sales. If you get enough following on Twitter, then you can use Twitter as a vehicle to drive traffic to your blog. Here is a few pointers on how to use Twitter to your advantage:

  • Communicate, not sell: Twitter is a communication tool. You can poke your friends, follow others, and engage in conversations with plenty of other people. But the moment you start going salesman on people, you lose your credibility on Twitter. You can’t expect people to listen to you if all you want to do is sell to them.
  • Tease your followers: if you truly want your Twitter followers to come and check your blog out, you need to provide them with teasers, but don’t give the whole story away. If you have written an excellent post on a topic that you want others to check them out, hint at it indirectly. But don’t beg people to come and check your blog out. It may work once, but could backfire on you the second time.
  • Provide Value: just like any other form of blogging, providing value is the key factor behind anyone’s success on Twitter. Don’t hesitate to post links to valuable content on other sites on your Twitter account. If you find a resource that you feel can provide value to others, post it to your Twitter page. It certainly wouldn’t hurt.
  • Keep Two-way Communication In Mind: a one way communication is as good as dead communication. It is vital for you to get back to people who send you direct messages. If you ignore people enough times, they will stop following you, and you’ll lose out. If you have trouble keeping up with your messages, download Twhirl. It certainly makes it easier to catchup.

Twitter is considered overrated by many marketers and you should definitely use that to your advantage. By the time, these folks realize how powerful Twitter is, you have gained a decisive advantage over them. Don’t forget that being successful with Twitter is all about communicating with your followers and following others. It takes some work, but at the end it’s all worth it.
