3 days from now, millions of Americans will go to the polls to vote for President. The Obama vs. McCain campaign has been tough and nasty at times. But the political season has been good to many political bloggers. Many folks get into the business of politics to add their voice to the race. Candidates lie and bend the truth and bloggers around the Web expose them and help folks make more knowledgeable decision.

By looking at this historic race, you can’t blame people for starting blogs to get a share of the pie. But running a political blog is not as easy as it looks. For one, you will have to be ready for personal attacks, and you can’t go around talking politics without exposing your own identity. Folks are passionate about their candidates, and you can get some nasty feedback on your blogs, so if you can’t take the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen.

Before starting a political blog, you need to figure out the voice and tone that you will be using on your blog. Some folks have gained a lot of success by going to the far right or far left on their blogs. Going to the extremes adds controversy to your blog, and let’s face it. When it comes to politics controversy sells. Guys such as Bill O’reilly, and Sean Hannity have made millions by stretching the truth and flat out lying. So if you are not comfortable with that approach, your options are limited.

The politics blogging niche is fairly overcrowded. The are a lot of politics bloggers out there, and the key to success in this market is offering unique value to your readers. The best way to do that is carefully creating a voice for your blog that is controversial and engaging. You will also need access to a whole lot of numbers and records, so be prepared for lots of research if you are hoping to make it in this market.

One key issue that you should consider before entering this market is its seasonality. The niche is very hot during presidential elections, but it cools off considerably afterwards. In case of this election, people are going to be more engaged for a few months to see who is going to fix the economy and end the war. So now seems to be a good time to start a blog on this topic. But beware that your success in this market will depend on how you can make interesting news out of not-so-interesting everyday developments in the world of politics.
