Before choosing a pseudonym for your blog, you should decide whether you need it. Many folks have achieved big success by creating reinventing themselves by using using a pseudonym. The best that comes to mind is Knightmare. Mr. Knightmare has written one of the best books on hacking. It’s not hard to imagine that due to the nature of the topic, Knightmare didn’t want to disclose his identity. But more importantly, the word Knightmare can be used for branding and other marketing purposes to sell more books.

You don’t have to have a pseudonym. In fact, in some markets you shouldn’t. I used to run a highly controversial political blog about my mother country, and I did not want to put my relatives and friends back home in risk by disclosing my identity. Not only did I use private registration, but I also used exclusive e-mails and information to make it impossible for folks to track the blog back to me. Does it mean it’s foolproof? Not really. But to protect your privacy, you sometimes need to use an alternate name.

If you have to choose a pseudonym, you should always choose a memorable one that can be used for marketing purposes. Your alternate name should not be offensive. For instance, you should avoid choosing childish, sexist, or racist names as you can alienate your readers. In addition, people can take you less seriously if you go by your pseudonym. If you are unsure about this whole issue, you should look at others in your niche to find out if any of your competitors are using that approach. But don’t get discouraged if no-one in your market is using a pseudonym. There may be an opportunity for you to position your blog in a unique way. But don’t use a pseudonym just for the sake of it. Looking cool doesn’t always pay the bills.
