Does Spelling and Grammar Matter?
So let’s say you are crazy about blogging but not so for spelling and grammar. After all, a couple of typos here and there won’t kill anybody, right? Wrong! This is a very obvious but important point. A lot of bloggers believe that having a few grammar errors here and there goes unnoticed by their readers. But the truth is, your grammar errors will jump out at people like a dark stain on a white shirt. Think about it. You see a super professional guy who has a $2,000 suit on and is dressed for success. But he has a dark stain on his shirt. You keep telling yourself that the stain isn’t a big deal, but the fact that you are thinking about it shows that it is bothering you. After all, what kind of professional can’t even get a clean shirt on? In the blogging world people will treat you the same way. A lot of people judge you based on how well you write and having a couple of typos can only take away your credibility. A pity but a fact.
Many picky readers will lose complete faith in you if you have spelling errors on your blog. Now I don’t want to be hypocritical here. I am personally guilty of writing posts that are not perfect. I write a lot of posts every week, and at the end of the day, there are so many errors that you can catch, but I do try avoid major catastrophes on my blogs, and you should too. If you have a post with 400 words and you have 20 typos in that post, then you are in big trouble. If you are like me and spelling is not your cup of tea, then ask someone to proofread your work for you. You can hire professional proofreaders for as low as $8 an hour. Keep in mind that these guys are not perfect, and they miss errors too. But by using them and also a good spell checker, you can avoid major errors on your blog.
I personally do not think that spelling and grammar should be a big deal, but many people are passionate about their language, so make sure you proofread or hire someone to do it for you. At the end of the day, it’s better to be safe and sorry.
