5 Reasons NOT To Not Blog!

Blogging is one of the hottest topics out there. People talk about it on the streets. But when it comes down to actually starting a blog, many are hesitant to do so. Obviously, you want to have something to say, and you don’t want to just rant for a couple of days and then let your blog die a slow death. Having said that, if you are under 50, you do not have an excuse for not blogging.

Blogging is not just about pleasure but about sharing knowledge. I think about blogging as a way of communicating what I know in return for what I learn from other bloggers and site owners. So whether you are an accountant, lawyer, SEO professional, or even an immigrant, you can always give something back to the community by sharing your thoughts and experiences.

So why don’t more people blog these days. There are a few reason that come to mind (the ones that I experienced before getting my hands dirty a few years ago):

  • Blogging requires you to be a Web Developer: Not true. You don’t have to be a guru to write a blog. All you need to know is how to communicate. Some blogs have only videos. Some have only picures. Whatever form of communication you choose, as long as there is other people who can understand it, it works!
  • Blogging requires you to write like a journalist: Again, not true! It does help to have content that is error free and does not have misspelled vords (like this one), but you don’t have to be a poet to write a blog.
  • Blogging costs Money: It costs time but you can do it for free. Sign up for a blog on Blogger or WordPress.org, and be on your way. If you want to be a professional blogger (make a living out of blogging), you will eventually have to spend money on design, logo, and maybe web hosting, but you don’t have to until you get to that point.
  • Blogging is a waste of time: This is a biggie. When I ask people why they don’t blog they tell me “what’s in it for me?” The Web today is all about giving and sharing information. I tell you what I know, and you tell me what you know. Everyone wins. Of course, nobody is going to teach you the exact formula they are using to let’s say make money or pick the right stock, but they will give you useful information. And don’t underestimate the power of the web. The web citizens are very smart and if you share inaccurate or useless information, they’ll let you know about it. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t blog though.

There are several other reasons here. Some people can’t type at night. Some people like to blog only once a century. You can come up with a lot of excuses. But to me, blogging is very similar to doing your civil duty (e.g. Jury). And best of all, you can usually monetize a good blog, so there is good chance that you will be rewarded. So if you are not a blogger and you are reading this, what are you waiting for? Go to WordPress.com and just sign up. You are set to go.
